March 8, 2020: International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on the 8th of March and is a time to celebrate women. This is also a time to reflect on progress, call for change, and to celebrate the courage and determination of the women who changed history and those who will change the future.

Here at awpl, we have a strong representation of female leaders. In recognition of International Women’s Day, we sat down with a few of the incredible women we are fortunate enough to work with and asked them a few questions about their work and International Women’s Day.

The most empowering and satisfying aspect of any role is to be recognised on merit for the efforts one has made.

What do you enjoy about working for awpl?

I am proud to be associated with awpl. Over the years I have enjoyed being part of its evolution into becoming one of the major travel retailers in Australia and New Zealand. The core values which now drive all aspects of our business motivate me as they encourage a more holistic approach to the development of staff wellbeing and success.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

Make the most of each moment because once it has passed you can never get it back!

What does the #IWD2020 theme “Each for Equal” mean to you?

The most empowering and satisfying aspect of any role is to be recognised on merit for the efforts one has made.  No-one should ever be judged, rewarded, short-changed or undervalued for any other reason.

"Look at where you want to be in life and follow that path."

What do you enjoy about working for awpl?

I joined the awpl back in November 2019. I enjoy working with a great team who are highly motivated to building the business of awpl. The interaction I have with our customers is a great challenge not only to make a sale but to create a positive, memorable retail experience. A winning result for the customer, my team and myself.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

I would say to my younger self to believe in and challenge yourself. Look at where you want to be in life and follow that path. Yes, you will make mistakes along the way, learn from them and don’t let disappointment take you off that path. Continue to change and grow.

What does the #IWD2020 theme “Each for Equal” mean to you?

“An Equal World is an Enabled World”. Women working together towards a positive outcome. We can actively chose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate each other with the support to face challenges and build each other up. Collectively each of us can help to create a gender equal world. A world that is healthier, wealthier, happier and more harmonious.

Be vulnerable, be your authentic self so that you show up for yourself and others in a more powerful way

What do you enjoy about working for awpl?

awpl has a diverse and inclusive workplace, promoting wellbeing, connection and a sustainable future. I love the variations in human experiences that I observe and participate in here. We grow from these differences; we get bigger and better and they open possibilities.

I also love being part of a business that values and invests in their people, and I have experienced this firsthand.  In 2016 I returned to work after having my third child, in a part-time capacity and energised by the idea of learning more and growing at work.  Inspired by the brilliant minds within awpl and those connected to awpl, I immersed myself in all that was being offered.  My development was supported by awpl and enabled my career to grow.  Through programs like Heartbeat, awpl has also helped me explore practices that support and create an integrated life between work and home, one with meaning and connection.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

‘Relax, have fun, you’ve got this!’

Be vulnerable, be your authentic self so that you show up for yourself and others in a more powerful way. Let go of control. Take a breath and ask for help.

What does the #IWD2020 theme “Each for Equal” mean to you?

I see this year’s IWD theme as an inclusive, wholehearted, forward thinking message for everyone, promoting collective action. We all have a part to play in making the world work for everyone.

If everyone adopts a shift in mindset and behaviour to challenge stereotypes, fight biases and broaden perceptions then collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world.

As we at awpl recognise and celebrate International Women’s Day, we are reflecting on the great women that we work and interact with every day. Here are some stats from around our business that highlight the strong representation of females at awpl.

From all of us at awpl: Happy International Women’s Day! To all the women in our lives that we are fortunate enough to work and interact with everyday, know that without you, awpl wouldn’t be what it is today.
